Large-scale Nave Installation FAQ
How and when can I apply?
The Large-scale Nave Installation Application form will be live via Submittable from November 27, 2023–February 5, 2024. APPLY NOW!
Can I have access to a floor plan or schematic of the main Nave area?
The symposium will take place throughout CCA’s main building, particularly in the Nave Presentation Space and Timken Hall. Here is an example floor plan of the entire main floor that shows areas of installation and activation for the symposium. The specific locations for the student installations will be determined based on proposals.
Can I apply as a collaborative team?
Yes! We encourage applications from collaborative teams, especially teams that bridge programs, divisions, grad/undergrad, and disciplines.
What is meant by “large-scale”?
Large-scale works have a physical presence in CCA’s main Nave. They can be seen from a distance. The footprint can vary, but cannot exceed a width of 20’ due to fire code. They can vary in height. We encourage works that are freestanding versus wall-based. We understand that time and resources are limited, so we are flexible in our interpretation of this term. Please e-mail exhibitions@cca.edu if you have a particular idea to discuss.
What alterations can I make to the building / floor?
Installations will only be up for the week of the symposium. Therefore, you cannot alter the floor in any way. You may not paint the floor, drill into the floor, or use anything other than blue tape to secure items to the floor. It is possible to connect or attach items to a wall or structural support. We may be able to rig something if it is very simple. Please be aware that enclosed structures violate fire code and will be difficult to approve. Please read the Facilities Guidelines for exhibitions and installations prior to applying, and then contact exhibitions@cca.edu with specific questions.
Can the stipend be used as an artist fee?
No, unfortunately, the stipend can only be used to fund materials purchases, printing, or other direct installation costs. Purchases must be pre-approved and follow CCA’s purchasing guidelines. All purchases must be made through CCA Exhibitions; students cannot be reimbursed. Amazon.com, Center Hardware, Arch, and ARC are all CCA-approved vendors. Please e-mail exhibitions@cca.edu with specific questions.
Will you be installing my work for me?
No. We are available to provide guidance, consultation, and assistance, but students must be available to install onsite on Monday, March 4 and/or Thursday, March 5th and be onsite to deinstall and remove your work on the afternoon of March 8. We will schedule a specific installation window with you based on placement and your work and specific nature of your installation. Let us know your time needs and we’ll work with you.
Who is jurying the proposals?
Proposals will be selected by the Exhibitions Department (Jaime Austin, Director of Exhibitions; Bryndis Hafthorsdottir, Gallery Manager; Manuel Angeja, Installation Manager], in consultation with Professor Nil Bayraktar, 2024 CCA@CCA Faculty Coordinator and Layla Namak, CCA@CCA Student Fellow.
