Event description
Drawing parallels between landscape and media, this work uses audio, moving images, still images, words, and the artist’s father’s drawings in a haphazard effort to extract meaning out of feeling. It’s a personal ode to a series of experiences in a multitude of natural landscapes, with a focus on the complications of understanding those experiences both as they happen but also as they exist in memory.
Central to the performance is an instrument that builds and transforms compositions as various images are visualized and interpreted through an order and cadence set by a live soundtrack. With a particular focus on how music is emotionally connected to the natural environment, this performance playfully explores the interrelationships between sound, visual imagery, and time.
Richard T. Walker's videos, photographic works, sculptural installations and performances prod at the vulnerability of landscape and the limitations of media, while challenging the viewer’s perception of these majestic locations and depictions. Solo exhibitions include: Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco; CURRO, Guadalajara, Mexico; Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan; di Rosa, Napa; The Contemporary Austin, Texas and ASU Museum, Tempe, Arizona. Group exhibitions include: SFMOMA’s Soundtracks and Bay Area Now 6 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
