Upcoming Power Outages - 188 Hooper Construction Notice Feb. 1, 2019

Posted February 1, 2019, 1:26 PM

Construction on and around the Hooper housing project is underway. Part of this work involves moving various utilities, including the overhead power lines, underground—which means removing utility poles and improving the streets surrounding our campus. It also means we’ll be without power during pre-planned times in order to connect the new underground lines to the sources that power our campus.

WHAT TO EXPECT: We’ll lose power to parts of our San Francisco campus per the following schedule (all dates and times are subject to change):

  • Wednesday, February 6 | 10:30pm-6:30am: There will be no power to 184 Hooper Street (the Grad Center) during this time. Public Safety will ensure everyone vacates the building after classes finish at 10:15pm.
  • Sunday, February 10 | 6am-4:30pm: There will be no power to 1111 8th Street (Main Building); the building will be closed and unavailable for use during this time. Facilities is working with the various departments to reschedule classes and events as necessary.

In addition, streetscape improvements will take place in segments over the next 6-8 weeks in order to minimize impact on traffic and pedestrian flow. Folks working in 184 Hooper Street (the Grad Center)—which houses the MFA Design Studios, Grad offices, and GC classrooms—the Nave (along the Hooper Street side), and 80 Carolina can expect loud noise during this time.

All community members on the San Francisco campus can expect workers on site; changes to parking, sidewalks, and crosswalks; and street closures. Please read all posted signage and/or follow directions from construction personnel.

CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE AND IMPACT

(all dates and times are subject to change):

January 2019: started construction of the new student housing facility; street parking highlighted in red on the map below will no longer be available until the project is complete in 2020, while street parking in yellow will have varying degrees of availability over the next 6-8 weeks while streetscape work is ongoing

February 6, 10:30pm-6:30am: no power to 184 Hooper Street (the Grad Center) during this time; Public Safety will ensure everyone vacates the building after classes finish at 10:15pm

February 10, 6am-4:30pm: no power to 1111 8th Street (Main Building) during this time; any classes, events, etc. onsite during this time will be rescheduled

Week of February 11: target date to start installing piles; piles will be drilled vs. hammered (known as auger cast piles or "DDP"), so we do not anticipate the pile installation will be any louder than current work on the site

Into late February: continuation of streetscape work on and around the project that will impact parking availability and pedestrian paths in the area; please be aware of your surroundings, read all posted signage, and/or follow directions from construction personnel

August 2020: target date for student move-in to new student housing facility
