COMAR-1000: Introduction to Community Arts
Course Description
This course explores various ways of activating the social imaginary, performing oppositional politics, and stimulating social transformation through Community Arts. This class will survey Community Arts movements by combining research models with experimental and collective art practice. We will study how different 'communities' work to improve local and global conditions in many contexts through creativity, performance, media art, intervention, and food. Students will not only be involved in collective art experiments, but will also be introduced to several working artists, arts organizations and art collaborations throughout the semester and develop a working relationship one of these groups/peoples. This interdisciplinary course is designed to give students the history, skills and experience in creating artwork in public arenas and with diverse members of the community.
