Description:
This course will introduce and explore the history and techniques of ceramics in architecture. Although one of the most ancient building materials, it continues to be used in contemporary architecture in numerous ways. Architects such as Antoni Gaudí, Louis Sullivan, and Renzo Piano have used architectural ceramics in their work to add vibrant color, complex details, and high performance to their buildings. More recently, many architects have started to explore the opportunities of using digital fabrication techniques in making ceramic building components. The course will investigate various techniques including die-extrusion, slip-casting, and 3D-printing and students will design and fabricate small prototypical facade components. No prior ceramics experience is required.
