Through project based assignments, demos, and lectures, students will learn sculptural hand building techniques, a variety of surface techniques using underglazes, glazes, and decals, as well as how to incorporate non-traditional materials and methods. Field trips, class discussions, guest speakers, and critique will also be an integral part of this class.Section Description:In this introductory level course to hand building with clay, we will break down perceived boundaries between what is considered ugly or beautiful by exploring topics such as the grotesque, abject, surreal, and kitsch, along with historical and cultural perceptions of beauty.
