Description:

What is Public Art? Public Art is a reflection of how we see the world -- the artist’s response to our time and place combined with our own sense of who we are. What distinguishes public art is the unique association of how it is made, where it is and what it means. Public Art can express community values, enhance our environment, transform a landscape, heighten our awareness, or question our assumptions. Placed in public sites, this art is there for everyone, a form of corrective community expression. This course will focus on the practice of developing and producing art for public spaces -- including permanent, monumental and temporary installations in the United States and internationally. Artists enrolled in this course will research and develop applications to public art calls, create concept proposals, three-dimensional models, 3D digital renderings and site studies. In addition, we will examine the role of public art and monuments in our society as an important reflection of our collective values and priorities. Most public art projects are an interactive process involving the artist, architects, design professionals, community residents, civic leaders, politicians, funding agencies, lawyers and construction teams. This course will include meetings and talks with artists and the many individuals involved in the Public Art Process. Students from all majors are encouraged to enroll. Online course sections will be delivered with both asynchronous and synchronous components as outlined in the course syllabus. Required online synchronous meeting times are listed as the meeting pattern for this course section.
