Description:
Section Description:In this class, we’ll survey the broad expanse of ceramics' material history-- not only to understand its domestic and artistic roles, but to examine how it has played a role in the social, technological, political, and religious development of virtually every culture worldwide. We can’t cover everything, but as many traditions as possible will be introduced. The study of art history can help us interpret and understand the present. As ceramic artists, whether you are making sculpture, functional ware, or a combination of the two, I believe that knowing the history of your medium better will help you make better work. My goal is to help you contextualize your own practice by engaging critically with multiple traditions—and, by doing so, gain new insights and inspiration.
