Description:
This class takes a survey of moments in the long and extremely rich world history of ceramics with the intention of examining more than just its domestic and artistic roles. Through lectures and discussions, we’ll look at how works in clay have played a crucial role in social, technological, political and religious developments in cultures both ancient and modern-- in Asia, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Studying the past: especially the ways in which influences and ideas have travelled around the world, will help students contextualize their own ceramic practices.
