Description:

Course Description:Upper-Level Craft workshops serve Junior or Senior students interested in applying their skills and knowledge in interdisciplinary studio settings. These courses have an emphasis on project learning, sustainability, global perspectives, and entrepreneurial opportunities. There will readings, research, or supplemental activities that help students contextualize their creative production within broad Craft dialogues. Please see individual sections for specific descriptions.Section Description:This course is designed to help students in the craft areas learn about developing, promoting, and selling their work. Through assignments, field trips, and interface with established artists and retailers, we will explore different markets including shops, galleries, a range of craft fairs, pop-up stores, and online venues. We will study the marketplace and create our own marketing strategies for these items based on insights gleaned from these sessions. Students working individually or in teams will conceptualize and develop a group of production artworks that they wish to produce and sell. Every participant will be expected to create a promotional packet that will include: professional quality documentation of their objects, a clear and compelling statement about the work, business cards, and a website where your artwork can be seen. Exhibition display for craft-based works will also be explored. In addition to opportunities for applying to different venues, our class will participate in at least one special fair or "pop-up" event, giving students the chance to test the market with newly-made goods in a craft retail environment. Past events connected with School-to-Market courses have included the American Crafts Council show, Oakland Museum First Fridays Pop-up, and CCA Spring Fair.
