Description:
Translation takes many forms in daily life. Conversation with others, understanding emotions, and creating works of art are all instances of translative acts. Transforming meaning from one form into another gives it new life and allows it to become accessible to more people. By examining translation theory, representative artists, and translative artifacts, these texts will give students the chance to draw inspiration from readings so they can experiment with creating multimodal texts whose purpose will be to translate meanings from differing media while exploring the potential of what a truly transdisciplinary approach to making art can allow. This course will help artists understand how translation allows one to transform meaning and reality into new forms. By reading about translation, studying ways that it exists in the everyday world, and encountering related works of art, this course will reveal the ways that translation gives us greater access to the world and ourselves.
