Description:
The democratization of technology is here. The tools to facilitate conception, production and distribution of cultural artifacts has proliferated and improved, to the point where traditional routes of access have been broken down. Almost anyone anywhere has the capacity to self produce and self distribute. Among others, You Tube and DIY/Maker culture has distributed a wealth of knowledge, guilty of handing over trade secrets, debunking myths and sharing techniques previously known only to those who devoted their lives to a particular trade, craft or industry. Where does that leave mastery? Is it even relevant? Is navigating our digital world a new craft? This studio will examine these questions as we become participants in this evolving future of self production in a multidisciplinary way; using tools and techniques from industrial design, experience design, graphic design, and more. Our goal is the completion of a micro, 'carry-on', factory which produces a consumer facing product. Outcomes across the participants may range in nature from conceptual to pragmatic.
