Description:
What is at the intersection of branding and social justice? How might designers use visual identity tools to ensure equality for all humans, shape environmental efforts, or craft other forms of activism? As we enter a new age of personal and corporate responsibility, it’s simply not enough to design a cool logo or identity system. Students select a cause, movement, or community they are active in or want to join as a jumping-off point to generate a 21-century brand. Through a combination of protest, volunteering, facilitation, and other direct engagement forms, students will be prepared to meet corporate briefs in a complex social context. Studio methods will combine first-person research with an iterative approach to dynamic identity creation in two, three, and four dimensions. Guest speakers and critics represent diverse practices ranging from more conventional market-oriented branding to using design for community organizing and activism.
