Description:
How does typography render thought visible?
How can we collectively develop new positions and perspectives towards the ways we use typography today?
How do we cultivate a graphic design praxis that is committed to working with thoughtfulness and sensitivity to the environments and communities we're a part of?
Through in depth readings, writing, group discussion, observation, material experimentation, walks, and visits to archives, libraries, and other local resources, this class will provide space to explore the possible answers to these questions. Students will be required to produce a publication and distribution model that attempts to share the ideas and work generated by the class, to communities outside of it. Participation is the foundation of this class. Presence, attention, and perspective will be the connective tissue in building a learning environment together. Readings will vary from required to self-generated, and will span genres, histories, and cultures, often reaching outside of graphic design discourse.
