Description:

Asian American literature has come a long way from The Woman Warrior and The Joy Luck Club. As Asian American communities further establish themselves in American culture, the literature is beginning to reflect their diversity and significance. In this class, we will explore the works of contemporary writers of Asian descent living in America and how their identities and voices influence the evolving genre. While considering the broad scope of Asian American literature, we will analyze the writers' recurring themes, the social and political contexts in which they wrote, their literary experimentation and originality, and their potential impact on perceptions of ethnicity, gender, sexuality and class. Literary texts will be supplemented with essays and documentaries to provide a foundation of knowledge for contemporary Asian American literature and culture.
