Description:
In this course we will examine the history of the American Frontier and its impact upon modern art and culture. We will investigate the representations of U.S. southwest borderlands in popular media, literature and film to consider the development of a cultural aesthetic from Manifest Destiny and Spaghetti Westerns through the rise of gangsters, outlaws and contemporary street culture. This class will emphasize the subaltern perspectives and histories of mulatto, Amerindian, and Asiatic peoples whose contributions to western culture in this country are routinely overlooked, or undervalued.
