Description:

The Power of 1:1 - The Enchanted Forest. This Fall we enter an exciting partnership with 826 Valencia, a San Francisco-based non-profit organization dedicated to supporting under-resourced students ages six to eighteen with their writing skills, and to helping teachers get their students excited about writing. Together we will design and build interior components of their new Mission Bay center opening in Jan 2019. The theme for the new center is enchanted forest and we will work with students and staff to create a playful environment that supports learning and incites creativity. Our mission at the CCA BuildLab - to energize public space and to architecturally represent invisible communities in our midst - will support this unique learning opportunity. Three pedagogical goals will orient our design-build exploration: 1) Create in an interdisciplinary and collaborative learning environment. 2) Design through physical making while investigating the potential inherent in each building material explored. 3) Test these notions on a 1:1 scale in a public site and for a specific community. The CCA BuildLab tests design ideas - with their attendant concerns for scale, proportion, material performance, functionality and adaptability - by building them at 1:1 scale. When charged with the fabrication and deployment of these ideas within the public realm, we are in fact creating the DNA for public interest design. We welcome interior and industrial designers and furniture majors to help us make dreams come true at 826 Valencia!
