Prof. Mariella Poli PUKAR a platform for cross-sectoral, multi-disciplinary, community-based, participatory action research to urbanization and globalization, Mumbai, India, Dr. Anita Patil-Deshmukh In our contemporary time the metropolitan cities are growing in a very fast pace in relation within the State, rural to urban or international, State to State migration that create globally similar issuesas such as displacement, marginalization, education, identity, religion crisis in multi-ethnic and minority underrepresented communities.This multidisciplinary studio course will challenge our understanding both locally and globally of multi-culture and class diversity in both its representation and advancement; as well to understand how two cities, distinctively Mumbai, India and San Francisco, USA with their different culture and urban size will cope to empowering and improve life of their underrepresented citizens. To extend our global pedagogy, during the semester we will create an international exchange with PUKAR organization through a platform (blog) where both group of students will place their projects on progress and exchange feedback. The course will require a specific concentration on social narrative of underrepresented and minority groups within our urban fabric. Through participatory research of the city’s various communities, contacting and creating a dialogue with the community social organizations and their participants; moreover, developing a special attentiveness to analysis the geopolitical chosen places for developing an understanding of the ‘outskirts of underrepresented groups’ in their everyday life.Through this in-depth research and a semester long project with the intention of discovering more hidden realities within the private or public spaces of our urban environment and with help from various social organizations the students will have the opportunity to respond by producing projects of their interests of art, design, photography or film or any form of media and technology they choose. The student will be asked to work in expressive modes in their approach to problem solving within their design expertise or how they can bring the less visible to visibility.The intention of the resulting work is to foster agency, improvement of daily life and inclusion. This course is a collective discourse with project approached is individual. The course will conclude with a book to illustrate these interdisciplinary projects and goes beyond classroom instruction to prove the power of design and art to generate ideas and innovation with regard for inclusiveness of underrepresented citizens within the urban fabric.The class will be divided in small groups to do collective exercises as such as psychogeography, ethnography field work, leading reading discussion and presentations.The course will integrate reading and discussions on essays from contemporary theorists and practitioners who deal with the everyday life of the underrepresented communities within the urban environment in the context of globalization. We’ll specifically focus on a few essays from the book The Future as Cultural Fact by Dr. Arjun Appadurai who is the Founding Trustee/ Advisor of PUKAR.***This course will take place on both the Oakland and San Francisco Campus***
