Description:
A poetry writing course that will focus on poets of African descent from the United States and the Caribbean. We will be looking at the role poetry plays in social movements and crises. We will be using poetry to look at current day issues including Black Lives Matters, Climate Change and Eco-Justice. Students will be focusing on the work of established poets and pursuing an in-depth investigation of one poet. Students will write free verse poems and poems in African-American forms (Blues, Kwansabas, Bops) There will be field trips to the African collection at the DeYoung Museum, MOAD, and the Japanese Tea Garden where we will write poems. A hand-made poetry book will be the final project.
