Description:
Critical Ethnic Studies Seminar are in-depth experiences in the study of multiculturalism and cultural diversity in American society and in societies that have impacted American society. Courses expose students to and inform students about the contributions of African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans and Latinos to American culture, history, and society.COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis course explores selected aspects of Asian American cultural production-- literature, film, visual art, music and theatre--in an effort to understand and appreciate:1) the definitive traditions and sensibilities of Asian American cultural practices;2) the development of Asian American culture as a response to life in America for the immigrant, refugee and American-born generations; and3) Asian American aesthetics as part of an evolving multicultural identity in America. Our analysis will emphasize racialization, class, gender/ sexuality, cultural resistance and empowerment, ethnic identity and BIPOC solidarity.
