Description:

Critical Ethnic Studies Seminar are in-depth experiences in the study of multiculturalism and cultural diversity in American society and in societies that have impacted American society. Courses expose students to and inform students about the contributions of African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans and Latinos to American culture, history, and society.Section Description:In this class we will discuss, examine and investigate the relationship between traditionally marginalized communities and stand up comedy. The work of comic artists has revolutionarily changed the aesthetic landscape of popular entertainment and effected the future development of performance art practices, across disciplines. We will not only observe these phenomena, we will research, discuss and address the consequences of integration and multiculturalism in America, and revisit historic debates concerning the representation of race in artwork and comedy.  Though emphasis will be placed upon the work of comedians of color, it will be taught with a sensitivity and inclusiveness that will highlight the accomplishments and contributions of many subaltern or minority perspectives within dominant culture.
