Description:
Oppressive systems shape existential values. Rapacious Capitalism fueling propaganda forcultural consumption and cultural upheaval shapes the language available to shift consciousness beyond the bondage of self (concomitant with the destruction of nature-Spiritual bankruptcy)? All values are understood via signs and signification-Semiology (Language). Does meaning control us or are we masters of language? What role does visual art play in revolution-evolution; or is meaning ultimately subverted by commodity culture and culture wars? How much agency, as artists, do we have while facing the impotence of history-the death of modernity? This painting studio course represents a genuine introduction to critical theories that relate to the construction of meaning in visual culture. We will begin at the level of the “sign,” studying the basics of semiotics, as well as, later in the course, the theoretical movements inspired by semiotics: structuralism and poststructuralism. We will identify key concepts from influential thinkers of the modern and postmodern period crucial to both a theory of the sign as well as a cultural lens. By developing a critical painting practice students will be able to disrupt the status quo with new signifying concepts and vital expression.
