COURSE DESCRIPTIONThe purpose of this course is to explore; class, culture, community and consciousness, through the lens of glass. Glass will be the catalyst for the students to consider how illusion and faith, play an intensive part in their art making process. Imagine how the narrative of glass, could be included in ones origin story. This course offers comprehensive instruction on all aspects of shaping, surface drawing, sculpting and forming glass in its cold non-molten state. Emphasis is on developing an understanding of coldworking techniques and skills through set projects and hands-on practice. Experimentation based on contemporary interpretations of traditional coldworking and mixed media techniques is encouraged. These techniques include: grinding, engraving, carving, sawing, cutting, drilling, sandblasting, laminating, and construction. Students possessing other glass sculpturing techniques, or more advanced applications, can also apply them in class. During the second half of the semester students will follow an independent study of their own design in conjunction with their instructor on a tutorial basis.
