Description:

This course provides an immersion in the nature of film language and form, moving from ontological media analysis through the historical development of cinematic form and the new perspectives and questions filmmakers address in the contemporary media landscape. Subjects are addressed through in-class and assigned film exercises, lecture/discussion sessions, and screenings. Formal aspects of documentary, narrative, experimental and developing practices are explored in an integrated, holistic structure that emphasizes the moving image as living, evolving form. The course combines a skeptical and experiential approach to its subjects, critically examining their potential usefulness as well as their limitations for creators of moving image and sound media. This is both a studio and an academic course: while significant time will be spent viewing and discussing film work, all class activities and assignments are intended to be approached in the context of making films and other moving image work rather than from a purely academic perspective. While critical film theory is a part of the course, it will be taught with an emphasis on its value toward Approximately half of the course will be delivered through in-person course sessions on campus, while the rest will be a combination of online asynchronous and synchronous sessions and work. Hybrid course sections will be delivered both online and in-person. Required online synchronous meeting times are listed as the meeting pattern for this course section. Additional course components will be delivered asynchronously or in-person as outlined in the syllabus.
