Description:

This immersive course invites you to explore furniture design and fabrication as a site-specific endeavor. In Spring 2025, we will challenge conventional notions of furniture as isolated objects or domestic elements by investigating its role in public spaces and exterior environments. Key questions we will address include: How does the history of a place inform design? In what ways can public furniture engage and reflect the communities it serves? The primary project focuses on creating inviting spaces to sit and rest within our expanded campus, Double Ground. You will work with reclaimed Coast Redwood lumber from the CCA Oakland Campus, designing and fabricating a piece that honors local history, fosters a sense of refuge, and perhaps even invites a moment of relaxation. This course features contributions from esteemed guests, including Wornick Visiting Professor Michael DeGregorio, Principal of Hood Design Studio (Oakland, CA), who will share his insights on public space design, and Joseph Perez-Green from Manual Labor (Berkeley, CA), who will provide expertise in the design and digital fabrication of public projects.Note: There are no prerequisites for this course.
