Description:
Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a designer is like you'll find out in this 3-unit interdisciplinary studio class intended for students from various majors we will be visiting multiple industrial design firms furniture studios prototyping facilities and factories and other professional makerspaces every other week. The other half of the class will be focused on putting what we learn during our extensive field trips into practice in our new industry-standard shops and studios at double ground we will work mainly in the open bench room and the model shop but will visit and utilize multiple studio resources throughout the CCA campus.We will practice design thinking in 3 dimensions in our design development process and will learn the sustainable materials tools shop equipment techniques and processes used by professional designers to create both study and presentation models process will initially be emphasized over product although we will execute more developed portfolio-worthy designs later in the semester. Students will work both independently and collaboratively and will gain the skills necessary to develop and communicate their ideas effectively.We will build on themes introduced in intro to design thinking including human-centered design circular design and the relationship between social/economic systems and the natural world ideas will be primary and we will explore them regularly through readings videos class discussions and direct research into the physical world.
