Description:
What does it mean to bear witness to racial, ethnic, and cultural injustice--as artists, but also as students, thinkers, and citizens in today's world? How can our work contribute to broader contemporary debates about discrimination and resistance? To what extent can or should we appropriate other people's experiences in the name of an art or greater good? In this class we'll consider the possibilities and limitations of bearing witness, both as makers and as consumers of art and literature. Major selections will include Junot Diaz's Drown, Ta-Nehisi Coates' Between the World and Me, and Amani Al-Khatahtbeh's Muslim Girl, as well as a diverse range of documentaries and works from the visual arts.
