Description:
Encompassing the continents of North and South America and the islands of the Caribbean, the Americas includes within its borders many cultures and languages. This course, focuses on literature produced by inhabitants who are descendants of those brought to the "new world" from the African continent during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. What is the African-Americas these literatures articulate across languages and borders? This semester we'll read (some in translation) and analyze texts by Afro-Brazilians, Afro-Cubans, Haitians, Afro-Caribbeans, and African-Americans.
