Description:

This course will help students find their personal artistic voice by further developing fundamental skills and design strategies. The course starts with technical exploration through chasing and repousse, which are techniques that have been used since before ancient Egyptian time. These techniques were also used in the Statue of Liberty. These processes take advantage of the malleable of the metal, creating dimension from a flat sheet. Students will make their own set of tools, and learn how to harden and temper steel. Students will be exploring links by translating source information into a piece of jewelry or sculpture. Students will examine how to build dichotomies and contradictions in works to add visual and conceptual depth and begin to find their artistic voice. Jewelry/Metal Arts 2A and 2B can be taken in either order.
