Description:
This course considers a number of such pivotal texts informing civilizations that have played a paramount role in world cultures. It considers their common features as well as differences and it brings into play the manner in which their message has informed a wide variety of aesthetic manifestations from art forms to philosophical and theological readings of the meaning of existence and the universe. The civilizations and texts under consideration will include Chinese, Greek, Indian, Hebrew, Christian, Moslem, and Mayan. The course closes by comparing possible modern candidates.
