In this seminar, The Art of Duration, we will encounter a number of conceptualizations of time and duration from a range of disciplines: literature, philosophy, cultural studies, and performance studies. Here, our goal is to investigate how these different concepts of time inform our understanding of the use of duration in different artistic practices. Together, we will look at photography, film, video, performance art, installation, sound, web, and electronic art to consider the aesthetics of time and its relationship to philosophical questions about the body and power. We will become familiar with key thinkers in philosophy, art history, performance studies, transnational studies, and diasporic studies.
