Description:
This course is designed to introduce you to a few key concepts in the interdisciplinary field of queer studies. We will talk about "queer" as a noun, a verb, as an adjective. We will explore the work of some queer artists, thinkers, and activists. Throughout the course, we will explore ideas and conceptual frameworks from queer theory, queer studies, and different (historical/contemporary) queer activist movements, all in an effort to better understand how sexuality, gender, and creativity may be constituted in relation to other forms of social difference (such as class, race, ability, national belonging) and in different forms of "being" and "making." We will build off of the questions we each bring to this course: what we know, what we assume, what we know we don't know, and even, hopefully, discovering what we didn't know we didn't know. There are no wrong questions to start us off: each of us enters this topic with different points of reference, beliefs, and experiences. As we work through this material we will go slowly, following our questions with respect, collaboration, and hopefully, a full measure of delight. Philosophy and Critical Theory (PHCRT) courses focus on developing critical reading and thinking skills, with an emphasis on learning to frame and explore meaningful questions. Students consider multiple perspectives and claims in the process of formulating independent, well-founded opinions.
