Description:
In numerous depictions of cyborgs, popular media has long speculated about the entwinement of human bodies and machines. Yet, developments in medical and computer science have blurred the boundaries between our selves and our technologies. In an era when technological augmentation, extension, projection, and replacement of our bodies are possible, and digital code promises to emulate the properties of the human mind, how do we define and know who, or what, we are? This course explores the philosophical idea that we are already posthuman, hybrid with media and technology. Together, we will look at short stories, comics, film, and digital media to examine how the very condition of being human has transformed in the wake of widespread technological development. In addition, we will draw on theoretical approaches from critical race studies, gender and sexuality studies, and disability studies to consider how these transformations intersect with other formations of identity.
