Description:
The universe is a kind of body, as is this sentence—and so are the complex biological and technological systems that produce this sentence as the trace of (my) fingers’ interaction with a keyboard. Our conversations will explore many ways of thinking, feeling and sensing embodiment as both matter and concept. We will imagine “the body” as a sensing organism, a communicative/aesthetic medium, and a politically consequential assemblage of beings, events, and objects. Assigned texts draw on conversations in phenomenological philosophy, psychology, epidemiology, pop culture, and somatics as well as critical interpretations of the visual and performing arts.To help focus our discussions, we will pay special attention to the critical moves our readings perform--the work they are asking “the body” to do. We will also practice advanced reading skills and explore performative embodied presentations of course materials.
