Description:
This course is designed to give students a full immersion in the fundamentals of painting.
Students examine contemporary world of painting in terms of content while developing the
timeless skills of composition, color, mark making, brush technique, paint layering, paint mixing,
and working in a series. Our focus will be using water-based materials. This painting 1 course is
also unique because we are investigating environmentally sensitive painting pigments and
support grounds, researching origins of organic and fugitive pigments, recycled painting
strategies, and studying the carbon footprint of a fine art painting practice, as well painting in the
natural world. This includes wilderness, toxic landscape, urban scape, and the collision between
nature, culture, and human impact. This course is targeted for fine artists interested in navigating
environmental perspectives as they develop, hone, and refine their painting techniques. Students
are expected to attend field trips in areas that could be considered sublime to paint from life, as
well as environmentally challenged sites. Both opportunities will be further developed in studio
work. This course fulfills the Environmental Practices minor requirement as well.
