Description:

This hybrid studio course is for advanced students of painting who are independent and committed. Students will learn to begin, execute, and bring closure to a body of work, and begin to gain experience exhibiting their work. Students are expected to participate in, and value, constructive critique. All students are expected to share insights, explorations and questions during class discussion. Students will learn how to research, explore, and articulate an artistic project. Students will define a contextual framework and vocabulary for talking about their work as well as resolve formal and technical issues in their practice. The results of one project should lend momentum and continuity to the work that follows. Students will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in documenting their work for the purpose of putting together a portfolio as well as writing an accompanying artist's statement. This course is a requirement for majors in Painting & Drawing. This hybrid class includes both in-person and virtual teaching methods. Virtual and in-person strategies will be given. Engaging asynchronous material and homework will be structured through moodle. Critiques, sharing of work, artist visits, and student presentations will be introduced through a combination of virtual and in-person approaches that build community and support the application of the course content.
