Description:
The two disciplines of film and painting have long intertwining histories since the turn of the century and the invention of cinema. The Lumière brothers brought us black and white sumptuous silent films while painters in 1890's France were in an explosion of imagery and color distinct from religious imagery at last. Through the centuries the endurance of this relationship has continued with contemporary filmmakers such as Ava DuVernay (Middle of Nowhere), Jonathan Glazer (Under the Skin), Wes Anderson (Grand Budapest Hotel), and Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) are contemporary examples of films deeply influenced by painting and still photography. Seminal exhibitions such as Painting and Film at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles will be examined and studio work will cross the disciplines through interdisciplinary projects involving painting, installation, projection, web based works. The course culminates in a public show in the sound stage at the end of the semester.
