In this class we will make a range of handmade papers from cotton, abaca, and various repurposed/recycled cellulose based materials using specialty paper making equipment and common household tools. Students will experiment with paper making to create multiples and one of a kind pieces. Handmade paper can stand on its own or be used in support of mediums including printmaking, bookmaking, sculpture, fashion, architecture, and more. We will learn three different approaches to arriving at different color pulp. We will also learn techniques including watermarks, layering, collage, and inclusions. Students will gain a hands on understanding of the process and history of papermaking. Papermaking classes are open to beginning and advanced students from any major; this class counts towards a Minor in Ecological Practices and can be repeated at the advanced level for credit.
