Description:
Situating the Syrian refugee crisis within the long history of massive global population displacements, from the displaced persons after the second World War to the Palestinian nakba, this course will focus on the work of, and struggles around, category-making: the counting, classifying, and naming of people on the move. Suggesting that the definition of a "refugee" is not just a legal category, but a process and a practice that has wide ranging social and political effects, this course will explore the ways in which people living in the humanitarian space act within-and in response to-this biopolitical apparatus. How does the work of naming expose people to new modes of governance, introduce new experiences of loss, and yield political claims and demands for recognition?
