Description:
The shape of modern society has been significantly determined by the rise of a mass consumption economy in the industrial age. In addition to shaping social life and economic systems, consumerism has had huge environmental impacts. This class will examine specific landscapes of consumption including the department store, the suburban shopping mall and big box center, the fields of industrial agriculture, the globalized factory, and the online marketplace as a way to explore the development of a consumer society and the ethics of consumption.
