Description:
Geared specifically for students interested in an experimental approach to fashion and wearables, this class is an introduction to a wide range of textile techniques including surface design, weaving, and three-dimensional construction methods. Students learn about the properties and characteristics of fibers, experiment with hands-on processes (twining, plaiting, embroidery, crocheting, dyeing, hand printing, and loom weaving), and explore how these techniques can be integrated into their design practice. Taking inspiration from visionary fashion designers, fine-arts-oriented artists, and vernacular clothing makers, students are freed from the limitations of manufactured cloth and expand the creative potential of their designs with unique detailing, three-dimensional constructions, and specifically designed prints and wovens for their clothing lines.
