Description:
From Field to Fabric explores the exploding field of Slow Textiles and Slow Fashion through hand work and woven construction. Questioning the sources and origins of cloth production, participants will begin the course through visits to local farms within the Bay Area. Students will process flax, linen, wool, and other raw materials: sorting, cleaning, carding, dyeing, and spinning fibers into yarn. Once plied into linear elements, participants will develop and execute a piece of woven cloth through the use of floor looms. Critical thinking around animal welfare, complex weave structures, and the material specificity of fiber selection will be emphasized. This course is open to students of all levels and all majors without prerequisites, but may be of special interest to students in Fashion, Textiles, Sculpture, and Painting/Drawing.
