Description:
Upper Division Interdisciplinary Studios extend a student's cross-school experience from Core Studio up into their upper division years. 3 units of Interdisciplinary Studio are required of all majors and must be completed in the junior or senior year. This advanced level studio is thematic in nature. Technical demonstrations are paired with thoughtful readings, seminar discussions and ambitious projects. Collaboration, experimentation and presentation skills are developed in concert with critical thinking.Section DescriptionThrough the lens of diverse cultures, we will explore Art and Science to broaden horizons with unique experiences and dialogue at the intersection of art and science, culture and ethics. We will create original interdisciplinary works integrating art and science in a variety of media, and in a cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary, and collaborative environment. We will examine how technology and paradigm shifts have potentially outstripped ethics. We will research, investigate and create hybrid works that reach across media and conceptual boundaries, relevant for an ecologically, environmentally aware globally conscious, and now virtual, world. We will cover a variety of science principles, ideas, and topics of student choice – from off-planet explorations to bioethics, examining similarities and differences of the scientific method applied to art practice and art creation. Students will be exposed to science, guest artists/scientists and virtual field trips. Projects and final works may be virtual, interfacing with global and public communities.
