Description:
This course will teach students the techniques of mold making and ceramic slip casting so they can produce multiples of their own designs. The learning of studio production skills will be paired with an investigation into the different conceptual frameworks for production and entrepreneurship. Through readings and discussion, we will ask questions about how value is produced in art objects and how artists have manipulated market forces to make art commodities that circumvent the usual rules of production in both art and design. Students will consider their own approach to art, collaboration, and entrepreneurship and learn to articulate their own theories of production in order to launch their own line of objects, made either by slip casting or another method of their choosing. The goal is to practice a mode of production that aligns with one’s resources and values.Upper Division Interdisciplinary Studios extend a student's cross-school experience from Core Studio up into their upper division years. 3 units of Interdisciplinary Studio are required of all majors and must be completed in the junior or senior year. This advanced level studio is thematic in nature. Technical demonstrations are paired with thoughtful readings, seminar discussions and ambitious projects. Collaboration, experimentation and presentation skills are developed in concert with critical thinking.
