Description:

This class explores regenerative local fibers found within an hour radius of San Francisco and their processing into proposals and artifacts and full-scale prototypes. Students connect with new fiber developers, from lab scientists and ranchers, to multimode fabricators. Projects are arranged around field trips to gather fiber, research and information, and studio time to develop material studies and prototypes, guided by a series of cumulative projects throughout the semester, which build upon each other to bring the students from small scale to developed, functioning prototypes, and ultimately exhibited publicly. The course develops primary research skills and documentation, photographic and video content, as well as hands-on workshops, including felting , knitting, working in the soft lab and rapid prototyping shops, and finally exhibition curation and installation. This course partners with outside entities to enrich and contextualize the students’ making: Fibershed, Mango Materials, Capella Grazing Project, Kelsey Brewer, life cycle analysis scientist.Upper Division Interdisciplinary Studios extend a student's cross-school experience from Core Studio up into their upper division years. 3 units of Interdisciplinary Studio are required of all majors and must be completed in the junior or senior year. This advanced level studio is thematic in nature. Technical demonstrations are paired with thoughtful readings, seminar discussions and ambitious projects. Collaboration, experimentation and presentation skills are developed in concert with critical thinking.
