Description:
In this course we will explore the field of sound art, focusing on sound sculpture. Reading and discussion will cover the aesthetic theories, technology, and histories that drive the medium. Students will observe and interrogate the relationships and potential dialogue between the audience and the artwork. Students will develop techniques of listening and engaging with their sonic environment. Students will use audio electronics and basic fabrication skills to design their own sound sculptures or invented instruments. Classes will be organized around hands-on activities, lectures, listening, and discussion of readings with emphasis placed on supporting self-directed sound art and sound sculpture projects.Upper Division Interdisciplinary Studios extend a student's cross-school experience from Core Studio up into their upper division years. 3 units of Interdisciplinary Studio are required of all majors and must be completed in the junior or senior year. This advanced level studio is thematic in nature. Technical demonstrations are paired with thoughtful readings, seminar discussions and ambitious projects. Collaboration, experimentation and presentation skills are developed in concert with critical thinking.
