Description:

This studio shares its name with the artist-run kitchen in Soho, established by American artist and architect Gordon Matta-Clark in the 1970s. Operating as a site-specific social project, our class explores food as a substance, a symbol, and a social agent. Through site visits, guest lectures, and our own rich cultural traditions, we track how food informs creative practice through sustenance, care, and community building. Field studies and short projects will research four social forms across cultural contexts that bring people together to share food: the potluck, the pantry, the restaurant, and the garden. We will investigate a range of artists, designers, collectives addressing critical social and environmental issues in local and global contexts, including Future Farmers, M6, myvillages.org, Fallen Fruit, People's Kitchen Collective, and Conflict Kitchen, and how collective actions, DIY strategies, activism and alternative economics reimagine and generate inventive processes and participatory forms for intervening in social and public space. Our studio will culminate in designing and producing a communal meal and food event for our CCA community.Upper Division Interdisciplinary Studios extend a student's cross-school experience from Core Studio up into their upper division years. 3 units of Interdisciplinary Studio are required of all majors and must be completed in the junior or senior year. This advanced level studio is thematic in nature. Technical demonstrations are paired with thoughtful readings, seminar discussions and ambitious projects. Collaboration, experimentation and presentation skills are developed in concert with critical thinking.
