This course offers a comprehensive exploration of global curation, with a focus on fostering skills in historical inquiry, critical analysis, and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding shared human experience and collective perception. Students will gain vital theoretical frameworks to critically engage with curatorial studies in today’s interconnected world. To frame the conversation, this course will propose a flexible definition of the "global" as it relates to the curatorial field, asking: What happens to curatorial practices when they intersect with global perspectives, and how does this intersection reshape our understanding of both? Through case studies that range from the colonial origins of exhibitions to contemporary biennials and Bay Area artist-led community initiatives, students will examine how curatorial practices and cultural discourse continuously shape and inform one another.A strong emphasis is placed on the ethical responsibilities of curators, addressing the complexities of power, inclusivity, and accessibility in curatorial work. Through collaborative, interdisciplinary projects, the course equips students with practical methods for developing thoughtful, inclusive, and resonant curatorial approaches, while navigating the intricacies of cross-cultural exchange and social responsibility in curation.The program in Visual & Critical Studies at CCA train creative leaders in visual and critical fields. Seminars offered under the heading VCS Topics build skills in historical investigation, critical thinking, and visual analysis, while providing students with key theoretical tools as well as exposure to thir academic, social, and artistic applications.
