Description:
The Workshop is designed to establish a community of writers at CCA. The Workshop will focus on the individual writing direction and practice of each student. SECTION DESCRIPTION:
This poetry workshop will focus on craft through experimentation and close readings of poems by an array of poets such as Wang Wei, Inger Christensen, Bhanu Kapil, CAConrad, and Terrance Hayes. Taking Emily Dickinson’s cue, we will “dwell in possibility” with weekly writing experiments, often started in class, which will include collage, somatic writing, interventions with official documents based on works by Don Mee Choi and Layli Long Soldier. We will also draw inspiration from other disciplines like film, visual art, and translation theory to widen the scope of contemporary poetics through cross-disciplinary discussions. The weekly reading and writing assignments are meant to be starting points. How you interpret and develop them, with your own imagination and predilections for language and subject matter, will be the core of our work together, and this includes revision—a crucial part of the creative process. At the end of the semester, each student will produce a chapbook of revised work and a short introduction.
