Description:
You’ve spent the last two years focused on creativity and craft. Now what? How do writers find opportunities, get work out into the world, pay the rent and still find time to write? This capstone course will introduce MFAW students who are about to graduate to the business of writing and literary citizenship. It will be designed as a practicum lab, and you may choose to work on such projects as applying to artists’ residencies and grants like the Fulbright; turning thesis manuscripts into book proposals; finding markets and querying magazines; submitting to literary journals and contests; participating in pitch sessions and live readings; joining literary communities or starting your own; putting together proposals for workshops or conference panels; creating websites/online portfolios; networking through social media or IRL; and learning how to analyze academic job listings and apply to PhD programs. You will research your specific interests, which may involve interviewing experts, and present to the class, in addition to providing critique and support to your peers. Readings, guest speakers, field trips and a possible weekend writing retreat will be determined by class interest.
